Elkem technical trainee programme: A journey of discovery from Shanghai to Oslo
As a recent graduate stepping into the industry, Jiaqi Liang reflects on the first steps of her technical trainee journey at Elkem. Through diverse rotations and hands-on experiences, she is building a strong foundation in both technical knowledge and cross-functional collaboration within a global industrial environment.
A promising start
I began the two-year technical trainee programme at Elkem in August 2024. With a background in chemistry and polymer materials, I viewed this programme as an invaluable opportunity to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical industry experience. Three rotations across various departments and locations will allow me to gain insights into different operational workflows and identify areas where I can contribute meaningfully.
First rotation: Elkem Silicones Shanghai plant

My journey began at one of Elkem's Silicones plants in Shanghai, China. Starting in my home country eased my transition into the corporate environment, allowing me to acclimate to the company's culture and work pace more comfortably.
In this rotation, my responsibilities were diverse, focusing primarily on two areas: promoting business excellence systems and driving internal cost-reduction initiatives.
Coordinating business excellence
The Elkem Business System (EBS) supports the company's strategic direction and goals, fostering a culture of excellence, continuous improvement and deep learning.
At the Shanghai plant, I worked on the local business excellence system framework, encompasses five major modules: production, logistics, procurement, marketing, leadership and continuous improvement. I coordinated with various departments to conduct regular self-assessments, collecting results and feedback, compiling summary reports for upper management and ensuring continuous improvement in weaker areas. Additionally, I worked on aligning the local system with the overalll Elkem Business System (EBS) to facilitate better understanding and adaptation among employees.
Driving cost reduction initiatives
In response to the downturn in the silicones market and the global economic slowdown, cost reduction and efficiency improvement became a priority across departments. I was tasked with regularly promoting and monitoring the progress of the Shanghai plant's 2025 cost-reduction plans. This involved organising meetings to track action items, assisting in the collection and analysis of revenue data, and compiling monthly reports for senior management.
Gaining comprehensive insights
Through these projects, I developed a deep understanding of the operational logic within the silicones division and gained clarity on the functions of departments closely tied to production. Beyond these primary responsibilities, I also participated in internal production line transformation projects and contributed to drafting promotional materials for the Shanghai plant. This rotation was both fulfilling and enriching, providing a solid foundation for my future endeavours.
Onboarding in Lyon

In September 2024, I travelled to Lyon, France, for a week-long onboarding event for technical trainees. This gathering brought together trainees from various locations, offering a platform to connect, share experiences and build a supportive network.
We toured the ATRiON Research and Innovation Centre, gaining insights into Elkem's commitment to innovation and sustainability. The experience not only broadened my professional perspective but also deepened my appreciation for Elkem's global operations.

Second rotation: ESG reporting at HQ
Not long ago, I arrived in Oslo for my second rotation at Elkem's headquarters, focusing on environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives. This new domain presents fresh challenges and learning opportunities.

Drawing inspiration from discussions with my local coach, I am eager to delve into projects that align with Elkem's sustainability goals, such as energy efficiency, waste reduction and social responsibility programs. I look forward to contributing to Elkem's ESG efforts and expanding my expertise in this critical area.
Embracing new experiences
Being part of Elkem's technical trainee programme has been an incredible journey of growth and discovery. Living and working in different countries has broadened my horizons and enriched my personal and professional life.

Recently, I had the unique opportunity to celebrate Norway's Constitution Day, witnessing the vibrant parades and even catching a glimpse of the King at the Royal Palace. The country's stunning natural landscapes have also inspired me to explore more through hiking and outdoor activities.

I am excited about the adventures and challenges that lie ahead and I encourage others to consider joining Elkem's dynamic trainee programme.
